The Creative Act by Rick Rubin

A Way of Being

I love my morning walks. I dedicate sixty to ninety minutes to this invigorating and life-changing activity each dawn. Not only do I get to explore new paths and neighborhoods (which I always enjoy), but I also have the opportunity to listen to audiobooks and gain new insights and inspiration. I am constantly blown away by the incredible concepts and ideas that I can absorb while immersing myself in the beauty of nature and the streets and paths of Las Vegas. This daily routine sets the tone for my day and gives me time to energize, reflect, and rejuvenate my mind and body. My morning walks are not just for exercise; it’s a way of life that has transformed me physically, mentally, and emotionally.

I listen to most audiobooks about creativity and creative processes, like writing or voiceover lessons. Regular readers of my posts know that I rarely, okay, never, share endorsement-type posts for books, although I could write countless reviews on the books I love and why.

I want to make an exception in sharing THE CREATIVE ACT: A Way Of Being by Rick Rubin, where Rubin shares his insight on the creative act, overcoming ego, and enjoying the process. His book resonated with me so much that I felt compelled to share it here. Every artist (or creative person) would benefit from his book or audiobook.

Until recently, I didn’t even know who Rick Rubin was. I discovered him by chance via a 60 Minutes interview on YouTube. That interview led me to his audiobook, which I recently completed listening to. Its five hours and forty-five minutes gave me miles of company and insight. I’m already thinking that I need to listen again soon.

“I set out to write a book about what to do to make a great work of art. Instead, it revealed itself to be a book on how to be.”

A Special Thanks to Rick Rubin.
