Google Has Sure Grown Since Its Founding In 1998
I remember when Google first started popping up online. My graphic design company had been designing websites for a couple years and were already entrenched in the information highway, or as we used to call it the “World Wide Web.”
Before Google, there was no way of really searching out a site or topic. You simply discovered websites through exchanging business cards and discovering web addresses through commercials and magazine ads.
Originally, called Backrub (yikes! seriously?), the name was later changed to Google, a play on the mathematical expression for the number 1 followed by 100 zeros and aptly reflected their mission “to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.”
Google Changed Everything
Even in its earliest versions, Google was a game changer. While you had to be specific about your searches (ex: restaurant+city+___________), you did get results, and that freed us up to explore the world from our desktops.
Today, only a couple decades later, you can just talk into your smartphone and ask it to “find the best 24 hour pizza,” and instantly get miles of choices for your dining pleasure.
